THE NABLUS RUNNER GOES TO BOLOGNA!
The Biografilm Festival in Bologna this year is hosting an extraordinary array of projects that are already generating significant buzz. Amongst these is our project "The Nablus Runner." This documentary, directed by Haicha Ladrouz, has been selected for the Bio2B Pitching Sessions, an event that draws top-tier industry professionals, producers, and decision-makers from around the globe.
The Story Behind "The Nablus Runner"
"The Nablus Runner" tells the compelling story of Deya, a young long-distance runner from the Nur Shams refugee camp in the West Bank. Amidst the chaos and constraints of the occupied territories, Deya's passion for running serves as both his escape and his silent protest. His dream? To compete in international marathons and ultimately, to run in the Olympic Games or the New York Marathon.
The documentary dives deep into Deya's daily struggles and triumphs, highlighting the physical and psychological toll of training under such oppressive conditions. With military roadblocks, checkpoints, and the constant threat of violence, Deya's journey is as much about resilience and hope as it is about athleticism. Supported by his family and friends, Deya continues to run wherever he can, his determination a beacon of hope in a landscape marred by conflict.
The Road to Bio To B
The selection of "The Nablus Runner" for Bio2B's Pitching Sessions is a testament to the project's powerful narrative and its potential to resonate with international audiences. After receiving over 150 applications, the Bio2B team recognised the unique and timely nature of Deya's story. This event provides a platform for filmmakers to present their projects to potential financiers, distributors, and festival programmers, opening doors to co-production and distribution opportunities.
Pitching at Bio To B
On June 10th, the team behind "The Nablus Runner" took the stage at Bio2B. Pilar Saavedra Perrotta, the producer from Palosanto Films, and Niccolò Stazzi from Eurofilm, represented the Italian side of this international collaboration. Their presentation highlighted the documentary's intimate yet universal appeal, underscoring its potential to spark dialogue about the broader issues of war, occupation, and the human spirit.
Niccolò passionately articulated the project's vision: "Deya's race is our race. His story speaks to each of us, challenging our consciences and inspiring us to look beyond the headlines to the human stories that lie beneath."
The director, Haicha Ladrouz, though unable to attend in person, shared her vision through a heartfelt video message. She emphasized the documentary's core message: "In a place where dreams are often buried under the weight of daily struggles, Deya's story is a powerful reminder that passion can break down walls."
Looking Ahead
With over $370,000 of their provisional budget already secured, including significant contributions from the CNC, Doha Film Institute, and other key financiers, the team is now actively seeking additional financing, sales agents, and distribution partners. The project has received support from various grants such as Corsica's writing grant ($6,500), the Doha Film Institute development fund ($7,500), and the French National Fund ($22,500).
The goal is to complete filming by November, capturing Deya's participation in the New York Marathon, and to have the final cut ready by Spring 2025.
Why "The Nablus Runner" Matters
In an era where global attention is often fleeting, "The Nablus Runner" offers a poignant, personal perspective on the Palestinian experience. This documentary is not just about running; it is a narrative of defiance, resilience, and the indomitable human spirit. Through Deya's journey, audiences witness the profound impact of geopolitical conflict on individual lives and draw inspiration from one man's unwavering dedication to his dream.
As the Bio2B Pitching Sessions progress, "The Nablus Runner" stands out as a beacon of hope and a call to action. It reminds us that even in the most challenging circumstances, the pursuit of one's dreams can become a powerful act of resistance.
